Orchid by Dimage X1
Orchid by Sony Alpha with Sigma 100mm Macro
Side-by-side comparison
View all 5 photos...
In the pursuit of getting sharper images, especially flower images, at great expense (for me anyway) I upgrade my camera to the Sony Alpha and also get a Sigma 100mm Macro lens...

On Boxing Day (yesterday) I took the equipment to Orchid World to further my explorations and learning curve. While I was there I also took some CU shots with my Konica-Minolta Dimage X1 pocket camera. Lo and behold the Dimage X1 images rival the Sony Alpha/Sigma 100mm Macro set-up in sharpness. The Dimage X1 when it was a "hot" camera cost like about US$200 less than the Macro Lens.

Compare the images taken with both cameras and see if you can find a US$200.00 difference. Of course with the DSLR you pay for the TTL viewing, the capability to change lenses, the various setting capabilities from auto to manual, etc., BUT you would expect to see some MAJOR difference, wouldn't you. Even the file sizes are comparable, the Dimage is 8 megapixel, while the Sony Alpha is 10.

Enuff said. Check the pixes for yourself.

Christmas Treat (or Retreat)

Fisheye zapped 1

It's Christmas Day, so Happy Holidays to those of you so bored with the stuff under the tree or the stuffing in the turkey, or the folks stuffed in your house, or whatever stuff has chased you to this Blogosphere to escape the ordinary... But alas, you found me, the extraordinarily ORDINARY foto"snapper". So I will make-up for my lack of skill and artistry with words of worthless wit amd witless wisdom.

The story of the Fotos here delivered: On Christmas Eve, while others thronged retail emporia, I took myself to Flower Forest, a self-indulgence if there ever was one. A throng of one, the marvels of zigging while others zag. Didn't make the "fotographing" easier though, just allowed me to cuss without offending anyone but God and the silent spirits of the forest, neither of whom complained.

The purpose of the Flower Forest adventure was continuing to explore the capabilities of my new macro lens. I also decided to do a "ying" & "yang" of photography by also shooting the scene with my "fisheye" thereby providing the WIDEST and CLOSEST possible views of the location.

Absolute disaster... With the Fisheye there was far too much contrast between sky and land; way beyond the correction capabilities of Photoshop. One of those occasions when a split neutral density filter would have been useful, but I don't think they make them for Fisheye lenses.
Anyway to save what I had I "whammed" them with UC and PS to make graphic images.

The Macros were a little better. Still fighting depth-of-field and camera shake, but a little better, I think. And then there are the "Story Trees".

Hey, I had FUN!

New Macro Lens. (Sigma 100mm 2.8 Macro) Trials in Andromeda Gardens. Now if I can only get the sun to stay out, the breeze to stop blowing, remember to carry the darned tripod, etc., etc... I WILL GET SHARP shots... The lens looks great... The Fotographer?????

Reflection Vertical 1

So off to Bridgetown we go to catch the pretty lights... The mysteries of shooting at dusk and in the dark when cameras take on minds of their own and record stuff you don't see... But that will be another fotopage because (I often ZIG when others ZAG) I of course got enthralled by reflections... Here are 6 or 7 all verticals. I have as many horizontal that I will post later...

Reflect on my reflections Part 1.
